It's used to see distant objects from animals and landscape, to search space, planets, moons. Galileo used it very extensively. It primarily used by astronomers to seek out new planets, new stars, research the sun. For laymen it's a hobby to see beyond their normal vision. The simplest type is just 2 pieces of glass/plastic at the ends of a tube.
